What happened to healing the world??

My daughter loves Michael Jackson. She recently completed a research project on a famous person and she chose to do her project on MJ. We read a lot about him as well as listened well to his music. He had the right idea in many of his song. He wanted to reach as many people as he could through song in hopes that someone would listen to the lyrics and change the world… even if it was one person at a time. I share my daughter’s love of Michael Jackson music. Many songs, from the 80’s and 90’a had great messages that sadly are still relevant today.

Most people will recognize that my blog always has a religious tone. I write in this way because it is my way of working through my belief system and making sure I am not a mindless follower but someone with an active voice sharing my own beliefs and truths. So here’s more…

I used to say that there was truth to all religions. My thought was that there was no way that only one religion knew the path to righteousness and saving grace. I see this theme in life. We are all different: race, culture, geographic location, etc. It is the belief that Africa is the cradle of civilization. If our ancestors began in a common location and today there are so many different backgrounds, there is still that commonality from our beginning giving the truth that we are all human beings equally. So logically, the thought of one religion holding all the answers is an impossibility because there has to be some commonality to them all.

Religions are so far away from the original purpose and continue to create a divide that was not meant to be. My belief is that original religious texts were to bring people together and closer to God (Higher Power). Right, sounds about right! What we have to reflect upon today is more political and much less morally sound. More people are more worried about following the rules of a religion than really understanding the truth and the truth is that our Higher Power is with us all and all we need to do is acknowledge the presence but we can’t see passed our egos.

I believe that people started with knowing the Higher Power and receiving power from that. Since we are all weak to our desires, needs and wants, we couldn’t maintain that focus on the Higher Power while dealing with historic catastrophes, so what happened? Ego came into power. People wanted to feel better and it became less important to focus on others and the beauty of the world created. In this ego-centric world, the leaders are hungry for power and the most powerful action is the ability to control others while making Gods of themselves. Having the ability to tell people what to think, how to act and who/what to fear, fed these mighty egos and in this day, ego has destroyed what the world was to become. At least from the Christian viewpoint, I believe that early Christians saw God as a control freak and therefore felt like they needed to back control.

When looking at religious texts, what do you see? Miracles, misfortune turned blessings, rules, regulations and laws. Religious texts are very large books and most of what is written is not original. Translations are introduced and those versions sugarcoat and eliminate verses that someone’s ego felt was unnecessary. So I question myself: “Why is the bible or any religious text so important?” or “Why do you attend religious services every Sunday?” My answer is simple: “I am a child of God (Higher Power) or I am a spiritual being”. I have felt the presence of the Higher Power and I have witnessed some of the beauty in the world. I understand that it is important to always seek the truth and I learn and am led by dissecting religious texts and religious gatherings. I seek the truth everywhere I go because the Higher Power is everywhere as long as I can see past my ego.

Debbie Ford once said,

“To live in the light of a new day and an unimaginable and unpredictable future, you must become fully present to a deeper truth – not a truth from your head, but a truth from your heart; not a truth from your ego, but a truth from the highest source.”

I have opened my heart to new experiences and this will lead me towards the truth.

Back to Michael Jackson and his wisdom: although the world looks like thriller, we have all the tools needed to heal the world. It doesn’t matter if you are black or white or anything in between. Just take a look at the man in the mirror and stop believing that they don’t really care about us. I hear the earth song and it makes me want to scream but I need to smile and keep the faith. I can’t change the world on my own so will you be there to change it with me? We all need to remember that we are the world and together we will be unbreakable!*

*- all italicized and underlined words are titles to Michael Jackson songs… all worth listening to.
